Marta Varga has been the head librarian at the Sand Point Public Library for more than thirty years. During her tenure, the library has expanded and undergone a wide variety of improvements. Mrs. Varga and her husband Frank own the leading taxi business in Sand Point. She left Hungary, followed her dreams and fell in love with husband Frank hoping to have a lifetime adventure.

Austin at Cut R' Loose Coffee Shop

Austin Roof and his wife Cheryl live in Sand Point where they own and operate Cut R’ Loose Coffee, one of the most popular hangouts in town. Mr. Roof and his wife are involved in the management of Aleutia, a fishing cooperative dedicated to paying a fair market price for quality salmon. Mr. Roof arrived in Sand Point to fish in summer 2009.

Jack Foster Jr. has a long tenure in various elected leadership positions including on the Aleutians East Borough Assembly and the Sand Point City Council. Mr. Foster is captain of the Shareena, a commercial fishing vessel. Captain Foster, affectionately known as Captain Jack, has successfully fished the Aleutians for more than forty years. Captain Foster lives with wife Amy in Sand Point.

Mary Olsen

Superintendents of the Aleutian East Borough School District have relied on Mary Olsen’s wisdom and expertise in the classroom for 33 years. Mrs. Olsen’s career in Bush Alaska as an English teacher spans the borough. Mrs. Olsen taught in Edlaolski, Alaska and substituted in King Cove for one year before coming to Sand Point. Mary is a certified central education specialist and has taught every grade K-12 in English and reading and served on the education board from 1974 until 2000. She continues her leadership role in education as a consultant and regular adviser to the Aleutians East Borough School District. Mrs. Olsen has resided in Sand Point for thirty years.
