On July 12th, Officer Tupper received a dispatch about a woman who was not breathing and that an ambulance was on its way. When he arrived at the scene, a woman reported that a 60-year old male had assaulted her. Upon investigation, officer Tupper noticed her neck was red, and there were several stray hairs in her hand. The witness stated that the attacker had walked into the room and proceeded to choke her, and this previously had happened a couple of days ago as well. Upon questioning, the accused male was found to be highly intoxicated, and after asking him to explain what happened several times he had conflicting stories, which determined he was lying. He was then placed under arrest for Domestic violence of the 4th degree, and was then transported to the police station. At the police station, he was read his rights, and then placed into Sand Point Jail without further incident.

The Squaw Harbor Cannery was located on Unga Island, one of the islands that composes the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. It was one of the canneries acquired by Pacific American Fisheries (PAF) in 1917 when demand for salmon increased during World War I.
The cannery was last operated by Peter Pan Seafoods, Inc., which still maintains limited operations in Sand Point. Today, the former cannery is privately owned and home to a Bristol Bay fish tender operation.
Squaw Harbor is approximately seven miles from the Sand Point boat harbor and accessible only by boat. Inquire of the Sand Point Harbormaster for permission and transportation to visit the old cannery.
Sandy beaches like the one pictured at left are commonplace in Sand Point on Popof Island and on neighboring islands. This feature makes the Shumagin Islands rather unique in Alaska as much of the state’s coastline is rocky.
Sand Dollar and Salmon Ranch beaches are within walking / driving distance of Sand Point. Beaches along Red Cove, also on Popof Island, are located several miles off the island’s road system and accessible only by four wheeler, or boat.
Beaches on neighboring islands can be accessed either by boat, or plane. A Bush pilot can be hired through one of the area lodges, several of which offer guided bear hunting trips.
Sand Point PenAir Terminal: 907.383.6000
There is daily passenger and air cargo service from Sand Point. Peninsula Airways (PenAir) operates scheduled passenger service from the island to Anchorage, Cold Bay, King Cove and Dutch Harbor. PenAir, Alaska Central Express Air Cargo (ACE), Northern
Air Cargo (NAC) and Everts Air Cargo all provide air cargo service. Kenai Float Planes in Nelson Lagoon and Security Aviation in Anchorage, as well as others offer charter flights from Sand Point. FedEx and UPS both deliver in Sand Point.

Sand Point’s Robert E. Galovin Harbor is home to one of the largest commercial fishing fleets in the Aleutian Islands chain. The Harbor encompasses 25 acres of waterfront with four docks and more than 130 boat slips. In addition, the City
Dock receives regular barge shipments and, during the summer months, welcomes the Alaska Marine Ferry Tustamena.
