K-12 Tobacco Youth Specialist – Aleutians East Borough School District (AEBSD)

NATURE OF JOB:

This full-time position involves educating and training youth in tobacco prevention at all Aleutians East Borough Schools while simultaneously promoting tobacco free lifestyles.  The position is under the direct supervision of the AEBSD Superintendent of Schools.  Length of position beyond year one is dependent on continued federal funding.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work with youth and local organizations to establish a youth tobacco prevention group in the communities of Akutan, Cold Bay, False Pass, King Cove, nelson Lagoon and Sand point.
  2. Provide local and distance staff support to facilitate regular meeting and activities.
  3. Work with and assist school staff in conducting in-school tobacco prevention and wellness classes.
  4. Create a system that will track each youth and keep an accurate record of training and participation in events.
  5. Develop all forms related to tracking.
  6. Develop and provide a referral system for youth tobacco cessation and support and support.
  7. Record and prepare appropriate reports and data necessary for input into required quarterly reports.
  8. Assist AEBSD with cessation of tobacco product use with its students, families and all school staff who desire to quit the use of tobacco products.
  9. Collaborate with AEBSD to involve parents and families in support of school-based tobacco prevention programs.

10.  Create linkages among all AEBSD community-based tobacco prevention activities/events that target children/youth.

11.  Support systemic training for all teachers in differentiating teaching strategies that align with the goals of prevention education for tobacco free schools.

12.  Maintain office at Sand Point School.

13.  Other duties as assigned by the AEBSD Superintendent of Schools.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in education
  • Recent work experience in the classroom
  • Strong work ethic and an independent starter
  • Knowledge of the Aleutians East Borough communities highly desirable
  • Good interpersonal skill with youth and staff highly desirable
  • Good organization skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to meet all grant requirements
  • Ability to travel via small aircraft
  • Ability to work nights and weekends
  • Must have experience with Word and Excel software as well as use of Internet
