More than two dozen Alaska clinics supported in stimulus package

U.S. Senator Mark Begich today announced funding in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for 26 health clinics across Alaska. Alaska will receive more than $14 million in capital improvement grants as part of an overall package of $851 million nationally to address immediate health center facility, equipment and service needs as well as create construction jobs across the country.

“The grants for these clinics will go a long way in improving the quality of health care across Alaska as well as create jobs in rural areas that desperately need a shot in the arm economically,” Sen. Begich said. “From the Aleutians to Kotzebue, significant investments will occur that will allow clinics to serve more patients and meet the ever-growing demand for quality health care.”

Overall the ARRA is providing a total of $2 billion in build or enhance health centers over a two-year period. The health centers in Alaska funded in the capital improvement grants announced today include:

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is expected to bring more than $1 billion to Alaska over the next two years, creating or sustaining some 8,000 jobs. Sen. Begich was a strong supporter of the legislation in the Senate and voted for its passage.
