A CH-47 Chinook helicopter from the 16th Combat Aviation Brigade out of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, brings a disabled Alaska Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter to the Palmer Municipal Airport Aug. 20 after the damaged helicopter was sling loaded off Knik Glacier. The Alaska National Guard and U.S. Army teamed up to recover the disabled Black Hawk, which slid and rolled over Aug. 10 on the glacier, while it was attempting to rescue five people involved in an aircraft mishap Aug. 8. None of the three crew members onboard the helicopter was injured during the roll over. The recovery of the Black Hawk was a total- force integrated effort involving resources, logistical support, and expertise from the active-duty Army, Alaska Army National Guard and Alaska Air National Guard. The Black Hawk was taken on an Alaska Air National Guard flat bed truck and transferred to Bryant Army Guard Airfield on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, where an accident investigation team will examine the damaged helicopter.
