Press Release Says, Guardsmen Killed in C-17 Crash Posthumously Promoted

CAMP DENALI, Alaska – One of the four C-17 airmen who lost their lives in a plane crash July 28 was posthumously promoted to Senior Master Sgt.

Thomas E. Cicardo was awarded the rank of Senior Master Sgt. after Maj. Gen. Thomas H. Katkus, adjutant general, Alaska National Guard, determined he met all the eligibility requirements for the next higher rank prior to death.

Eligibility requirements include meeting the appropriate time in grade, time in service and accomplishment of the necessary professional military education.

No financial benefits will accrue as a result of this promotion.

Sergeant Cicardo served his country with high distinction for more than 28 years in the Armed Forces of the United States. Prior to joining the Alaska Air National Guard, Sergeant Cicardo served in the US Marine Corp, US Army, and the Air Force Reserve. He joined the Alaska Air National Guard in September of 1997, where his wide ranging military background made him an invaluable asset.
