This edition of In the Loop contains information regarding two programs that are available to help local fishing and other businesses confronting the current challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic (the CARES Act Relief Funding for Alaska Fishery Participants and the Paycheck Protection Program). KSDP General Manager Austin Roof will feature two interviews on the programs on Tuesday August 4th at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m.
This edition also contains information from the Aleutians East Borough School District regarding non-internet-based virtual solutions to make distance learning accessible to students in the district. Students will have the ability to interact with teachers and access study materials at home.

The Shumagin Island Salmon Fishery has been restricted. The upcoming opener will begin on Saturday, June 20 at 6am and close at 10pm on Sunday June 21, 2020.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be conducting a preseason fishery stakeholder’s meeting at
10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 20. Due to the progression of COVID-19, this year the preseason meeting will be
held via teleconference only. The meeting will be broadcast on KSDP Sand Point public radio station 830AM
and livestreamed at http://apradio.org/. There are a limited number of teleconference lines. If you would like
to call into the meeting please contact the ADF&G office in Sand Point for the call-in information.
The purpose of this meeting is to provide all interested parties an opportunity to discuss the upcoming salmon
season with ADF&G staff.
Topics covered will include:

– Department COVID-19 mitigation plans
– 2020 management strategy
– 2020 salmon outlook
– 2020 department test fisheries
– Other topics as time permits

The Aleutians East Borough held their Winter Fisheries meeting on Wednesday December 18th at 10AM for about an hour. Parties on the line to include NMFS groundfish managers, State managers, observer and EM specialists, enforcement reps, King Cove Harbor, Sand Point and Anchorage AEB offices.

Commercial salmon fishing will be allowed in the Beaver Bay, Balboa Bay, Southwest Stepovak, East Stepovak, and Northwest Stepovak sections, excluding the waters of Orzinski Bay north of a line from Elephant Point at 55° 41.92ʹ N. lat., 160° 03.20ʹ W. long. to Waterfall Point at 55° 43.18ʹ N. lat., 160° 01.13ʹ W. long. (Statistical Area 281-50) of the Southeastern District for 132 hours from 9:00 a.m. Thursday, August 15 until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday August 20. The Stepovak Flats Section will remain closed.
As previously announced:
The current commercial salmon fishing period in the Shumagin Islands Section of the Southeastern District, the Southwestern District, and the Unimak District will be extended from 9:00 p.m. Friday, August 9 until further notice.
Commercial salmon fishing in the South Central District will be allowed from 8:00 a.m. Monday, August 5 until further notice.
Commercial salmon fishing in the Bechevin Bay Section of the Northwestern District will be allowed from 8:00 a.m. Monday, August 5 until further notice.
All closed waters in the above locations will be as described in the regulation book or as adjusted by emergency order.
